Ground engineering, also known as geotechnical engineering, is about the understanding of soil, rock and strata mechanics; the identification of these mechanics at mining, construction and civil engineering project sites; and the application of solutions to stabilise conditions so as to allow a project to proceed. The main objective is to increase the soil density, shear strength while decreasing water penetration and compressibility so that the soil has improved load bearing capacity, controls groundwater and is more stable.
